Biography

A French progressive rock band formed in Lyon in 1970, Pulsar has reformed several times around founding members Jacques Roman (keyboards), Gilbert Gandil (guitar, vocals), Roland Richard (piano, flute) and Victor Bosch (drums). Originally a rhythm'n'blues trio called Free Sound from 1966 onwards, the group evolved towards progressive rock with Roland Richard, then Philippe Roman (bass). In 1971, Pulsar took part in the Groovy Pop Session concert at Golf Drouot, which resulted in a compilation with other groups such as Ange. The selected track, the instrumental "Pulsar", is featured on the first album recorded for the English label Kingdom Records, Pollen, released in 1975. The following year, its successor The Strands of the Future proved a commercial success, taking the band on a 160-concert tour. Without Philippe Roman, replaced by Michel Masson, Pulsar signed with CBS for the following album Halloween (1977), considered their artistic peak. In 1981, with new bassist Louis Paralis, the band adapted Austrian writer Peter Handke's novel Bienvenue au Conseil d'Administration into music, which was staged by Bruno Carlucci at the Théâtre de l'Est lyonnais in Vénissieux and recorded. After several years' silence, Pulsar made a comeback in 1988 with the recording of the album Görlitz, released the following year on the Musea label. In 2002, the same quintet returned to the public at the Baja Prog festival in Mexicali, Mexico, before working on the album Memory Ashes (2007). In 2010, Jacques Roman and Robert Gandil are back together in a new formation called Siiilk, recording three albums between 2012 and 2022.
