Born October 16, 1940, in Amritsar, Punjab, Narendra Chanchal was an Indian singer who mastered and popularised the art of devotional music. As a child, he learned from his mother who would often sing bhajans at neighbourhood events. During his nearly four-decade career, Narendra Chanchal put his voice to numerous well-known bhajans and Hindi film songs, beginning with 1973's "Beshak Mandir Masjid Todo" for the Indian Hindi-language musical romance film Bobby – for which he won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award – and taking in highlights like "Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hai", "Tune Mujhe Bulaya Sherawaliye", "Ambe Tu Hai Jagadambe Kali", among many others. Also known as "the Midnight Singer", his biography of the same name was released in 2009. Narendra Chanchal died at the age of 80 on 22 January 2021 at New Delhi's Apollo Hospital due to an age-related illness.
