Biography
The Motet is an American funk ensemble from Denver established in Boulder in 1998. The group consists of the musicians Dave Watts, Ryan Jalbert, Joey Porter, Garrett Sayers, Drew Sayers, and Sarah Clarke. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by funk, soul, and jazz. The ensemble was founded by the drummer Watts as a musical collective with a rotating lineup. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording Breathe (1999) produced by Watts. The Motet achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Play (2001) and the live recording Live (2002) released on the label Harmonized Records. Their discography included the studio recording Music for Life (2004) and the studio recording Instrumental Dissent (2006). The recording Instrumental Dissent achieved professional recognition for featuring the voices of the activists Harry Belafonte and Noam Chomsky. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the eponymous studio recording The Motet (2014) which was co-written by the members and recorded on analog equipment. Their recording career included the studio recording Totem (2016) produced by the musician Eric Krasno and the studio recording Death Or Devotion (2019). The Motet achieved professional recognition for performing at the Bonnaroo festival and the High Sierra Music Festival.
