Nicholas John Currie, born 11â¯Februaryâ¯1960 in Paisley, Scotland, is a singerâsongwriter known professionally as Momus. After attending Edinburgh Academy and spending formative years in London, Paris, Tokyo, Newâ¯York, Berlin and Osaka, he began his musical career in 1981 with the band The Happy Family, releasing a single and the concept album The Man on Your Street: Songs of the Dictator Hall on the indie label 4AD. In 1986 he issued the EP Nicky, a set of Jacquesâ¯Brel translations, and in 1988 released his debut studio album Tender Pervert. The following year, Don't Stop the Night produced the single "The Hairstyle of the Devil", which peaked at Number 94 on the UK Singles Chart. Throughout the 1990s Momus continued to release albums such as The Ultraconformist (Live Whilst Out of Fashion) (1992), The Philosophy Of Momus (1995) and 20 Vodka Jellies (1996), collaborating with Japanese pop artists and contributing songs that reached number one on the Japanese charts. His 2001 album Folktronic and 2003 release Oskar Tennis Champion expanded his international reach. In 2020 he issued Vivid, a record documenting the COVIDâ19 pandemic and his own illness, which received media coverage.
