One of the bands that helped bring indie rock into the mainstream during the 1990s and 2000s, Modest Mouse emerged from Issaquah, Washington, in 1993, taking their name from a line in Virginia Woolfâs short story âThe Mark on the Wall.â Founded by singer, lyricist, and guitarist Isaac Brock with drummer Jeremiah Green and bassist Eric Judy, they released their debut EP, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?, in 1994. They followed it with the 1996 album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, but their commercial breakthrough came after several personnel changes, when their fourth album, Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004), produced the hit singles âFloat Onâ and âOcean Breathes Salty.â Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band for We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (2007), which became their first US chart-topping album and included âDashboard,â âMissed the Boat,â and âWeâve Got Everything.â After years of touring and festival appearances, Modest Mouse returned with Strangers to Ourselves (2015), which reached number 3 in the US, while âLampshades on Fireâ topped the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. They returned to number 1 on that chart with 2021âs âWe Are Between,â the first single from The Golden Casket. In 2022, the band marked the 25th anniversary of The Lonesome Crowded West with a dedicated tour, but suffered a major loss when Green died of cancer that December. Modest Mouse remained active with anniversary projects, continued touring, and the 2024 reissue and tour for Good News for People Who Love Bad News. In 2026, Brock, now the only remaining original member, led the band into a new phase with âLook How Farâ¦,â their first new song in five years, followed by the album An Eraser and a Maze, released on his Glacial Pace label.
