Madras Lalotangi Vasanthakumari, known as M. L. Vasanthakumari, was born on July 3, 1928, in Madras (now Chennai), India. She was a Carnatic musician and playback singer from a musical family. At age 12, she made her debut accompanying her mother in a recital and gave her first solo performance in Bengaluru in 1942. Vasanthakumari's breakthrough came under the tutelage of G. N. Balasubramaniam. She began performing regularly on stage by 1950, with notable songs including "Ellam Inbamayam" from the film Manamagal (1951) and "Paarkadal Alaimele" from Raja Desingu. Vasanthakumari received the Padma Bhushan award in 1967. She died of cancer on October 31, 1990, at age 62.
