Michael William Hugh Vernon was born on 20 November 1944 in Harrow, Middlesex, and became a British record producer, sound engineer, percussionist, and executive producer. After starting at Decca Records in 1963, Mike Vernon produced Bluesbreakers with Ericâ¯Clapton for Johnâ¯Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in 1966, launching his career in the British blues scene. He founded the Blue Horizon label, signing artists such as Fleetwoodâ¯Mac, Savoyâ¯Brown, and Chickenâ¯Shack, and produced Fleetwoodâ¯Macâs 1968 single "Albatross", which reached the UK Singles Chart. He was also a member of Olympic Runners (1974-1979) and Rocky Sharpe & the Replays (1979-1983), serving as a producer and percussionist. Mike Vernonâs own albums, including Bring It Back Home (1971), Moment of Madness (1973), Just a Little Bit (2015), and Beyond the Blue Horizon (2018), were released on his own imprint, and he continued to produce for emerging blues talents into the 2010s. His work earned a BASCA Gold Badge Award in 2013, and he was appointed MBE in 2020 for services to music. Mike Vernon died on 2 March 2026 at age 81.
