Michael William Sammes, born on February 19, 1928, in Reigate, Surrey, England, was an English musician vocal session arranger. He learned the cello and played in his school orchestra before joining The Coronets, a vocal group that did backup work for the Big Ben Banjo Band. By 1957, he formed the Mike Sammes Singers, which recorded several albums and performed on many Disneyland Records albums. Notable collaborations include providing backing vocals for The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" and Olivia Newton-John's early country crossover hits such as "Banks of the Ohio". The Mike Sammes Singers had one entry in The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, for "Somewhere My Love" in July 1967. Sammes died on May 19, 2001, at the age of 73.
