Biography

Mike Holober is a jazz pianist, composer and teacher residing in New York. He is a professor at the City College of New York and much of his work is inspired by the natural world. As a sideman he has played on more than 70 albums. He trained as a classical pianist and conductor before moving to New York in 1986. One of his early collaborations was with the sax player Nick Brignola. His modern jazz compositions have been performed by among others, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Zagreb JazzOrkestar, The Gotham Wind Symphony, UMO, RTV Big Band Slovenia and The Airmen of Note. In the 1990s he formed the Mike Holober Quintet with Brian Blade, Tim Ries, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Scott Colley and John Paticucci. They released 'Canyon' in 2003 and 'Wish List' in 2006. His other projects include the jazz octet Balancing Act and the Mike Holober/Marvin Stamm Quartet. Holober also formed a big band, the Gotham City Orchestra, which released 'Thought Trains' in 2004 and 'Quake' in 2009. In 2019 he released the double album 'Hiding Out' with the Gotham Jazz Orchestra, an album of two suites. 'Hiding Out' is inspired by the stark beauty of the Wyoming countryside and 'Flow' by the Hudson River.
