Biography

An all-rounder touched by grace, Meredith Monk is one of those multi-faceted artists whose research had a major impact on the artistic evolution of her time. A musician (mainly pianist), composer and soprano singer, the American (b. 1942) is part of a minimalist musical avant-garde based on the voice and its multiple resonances. Her work, released on the ECM label shortly after her debut, includes some that are already considered major in scope. The discs Dolmen Music (1981), Facing North (1992) and Volcano Songs (1997) are profound and unprecedented experiments. Open to other disciplines, Meredith Monk has performed, composed and directed for the cinema, and composed or directly conceived some twenty choreographies. The 2008 album Impermanence is followed in 2011 by the mirific Songs of Ascension.
