Biography

In the space of a few memorable appearances, Menahan Street Band has become the Booker T. & the MG's of today. Formed in 2007 by Thomas Brenneck, the band is named after Menahan Street, the New York street where guitarist Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings lives. In 2008, Menahan Street Band released Make the Road by Walking, whose title track was sampled by Jay-Z for "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is...)", much to the delight of the band's financial returns. Menahan Street Band members reunite as The Expressions with Lee Fields, on Aloe Blacc's Good Things album in 2010, or with Charles Bradley for No Time for Dreaming in 2011. A purely instrumental band, Menahan Street Band explores all the tones of soul and funk on 2013's progressive The Crossing .
