Manjapara Devesa Bhagavathar Ramanathan, known professionally as M.D. Ramanathan, was born on May 20, 1923, in Manjapra, Palakkad District, Madras Province (now Kerala), India. He began his musical journey under the guidance of his father and later became a disciple of Tiger Varadachariar at Kalakshetra. M.D. Ramanathan served as Professor of Music at Kalakshetra and was known for his unique singing style, characterized by a deep voice and slow pace. He composed over 300 songs in Tamil, Telugu, and Sanskrit, using the mudra Varadadasa. Notable compositions include "Thillana" and "Hariyum Haranum". M.D. Ramanathan received several awards, including the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975. He passed away on April 27, 1984, at the age of 61.
