Biography
The McIntosh County Shouters are a traditional Gullah musical group from Briar Patch in Bolden, Georgia. They are known for preserving the ring shout, one of the oldest continuously practiced African-American traditions. In 1980, folklorists discovered the group performing Watch Night shouts centered around Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, descendants of former slaves London and Amy Jenkins who passed down the tradition. The group's first recordings were released by Smithsonian Folkways in Slave Shout Songs from the Coast of Georgia (1984). They received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1993. Founding member Lawrence McKiver, born April 1915, played a crucial role in maintaining the tradition's continuity until his death in 2013. The group released another album, Spirituals and Shout Songs from the Georgia Coast, in 2017.
