Matuto, an American blues and bluegrass band, was formed in New York City on February 28, 2009. The group was officially established by Clay Ross and Rob Curto during their performance at the REC BEAT festival in Recife, Brazil. Matuto's name is derived from a Brazilian slang term for "country bumpkin." The band has since become an international touring act.
Matuto released their self-titled debut album Matuto on November 18, 2011. They have collaborated with notable artists such as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. In 2009, the band received a Fulbright Grant in Recife, Brazil. Matuto was selected as Official Showcasing Artists for Womex in 2011 and as American Musical Ambassadors for the U.S. State Department in 2012.
