Biography

Matthew Dear, born April 4, 1979 in Kingsville, Texas, is an American electronic music producer and DJ, known for his innovative blend of pop and minimal techno. Originally from Texas, he moved to Michigan as a teenager, where the Detroit techno scene influenced his sound. While attending the University of Michigan, he co-founded the record label Ghostly International with Sam Valenti IV. Dear's debut single, "Hands Up For Detroit" (1999), and subsequent tracks like "Stealing Moves" and "Mouth to Mouth" (as Audion) solidified his presence in the electronic music scene. His first album, Leave Luck to Heaven (2003), received critical acclaim, with the single "Dog Days" becoming a hit among DJs. Dear continued to explore various styles under monikers like Audion, False, and Jabberjaw. His sophomore album, Asa Breed (2007), was re-released with new tracks in 2008, followed by tours with Hot Chip and Interpol. In 2010, Black City earned widespread praise for its conceptual vision and led to a global tour. Dear revived his Audion alias in 2013, culminating in the album Alpha (2016). His 2017 releases, including "Modafinil Blues," marked a return to solo performances. In 2018, he released the album Bunny and later in 2021, another album Preacher's Sigh & Potion: Lost Album.
