Biography

Álvaro Yuri Alberto da Cunha, known as Yuri da Cunha (born September 13, 1980 in Sumbe, Angola), is an Angolan singer. He began performing at the age of ten and released his first CD in 1993. His influences include André Mingas, Carlos Burity, Eduardo Paím, and Michael Jackson. In 2004, he won that year’s Top Rádio Luanda with the song "Makumba." He has released several albums, including Eu (2005), Kuma Kwa Kié (2008), and Canta Artur Nunes (2012). His 2013 collaboration with the South African group Uhuru, “Y-tjukutja,” became one of the most-played songs in South Africa at the time. Cunha and Uhuru performed the song at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014, where it won Best Collaboration, and Cunha received two nominations for Song of the Year with “Atchu tchu tcha” and for Best Lusophone act.
