Born in Trondheim in 1980, Norwegian cellist and conductor Martin Wåhlberg is founder of the Orkester Nord and Trondheim Barokk ensembles. He studied Baroque and modern cello at the University of Trondheim, before deepening his knowledge of French music at the Conservatoire de Rouen, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, alongside studies in art history and literature between Trondheim and the Sorbonne in Paris. He specialized in the history of 18th-century opera, and in 2009 founded his first ensemble, the Trondheim Barokk, with whom he recorded Le Roman des Lumières: Chansons dans le roman français (2017), featuring compositions by Philidor, Devienne, Grétry and Krumpholz. In 2018, the Orkester Nord chamber orchestra, playing on period instruments, took over from the Trondheim Barokk and recorded a preview for the Aparté label of Grétry's opera Raoul Barbe Bleue (2019), composed in 1785 and premiered four years later. Wåhlberg continues to explore the song and music of the Age of Enlightenment with Pfleger: The Life and Passion of the Christ (2021), Mozart & Grétry, 1773 (2022) and Duni: Le Peintre amoureux de son modèle - Les Deux Chasseurs et la La Laitière (2023), bringing together two French-language operas by Italian composer Egidio Duni (1708-1775). In 2025, his version of The Magic Flute appears, followed by Philidor's opera Ernelinde, Princesse de Norvège, with Judith van Wanroij, Thomas Dolié, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Les Chantres du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and the vocal ensemble Vox Nidrosiensis, who accompany him in other productions.
