Biography
Martin Gerard James Neary, also known as Martin Neary, was born on March 28, 1940, in London, and was an English organist and choral conductor. He served as a chorister of the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace from age eight, singing at significant events including the christening of Charles III in 1948 and the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. He studied theology and music at Cambridge University. His career included roles as Organist and Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral from 1972 to 1988, where he commissioned new works from composers like Jonathan Harvey and John Tavener. From 1988 to 1998, he was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, directing the funeral service for Princess Diana in 1997. He received the Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) in 1998 for his services related to Diana's funeral. However, he was dismissed from Westminster Abbey in April 1998. He was the first conductor of the Millennium Youth Choir of the Royal School of Church Music. He served as chairman of the Herbert Howells Society from 1992 to 2024 and later became organist of St Michael and All Angels Church in Barnes. He retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He passed away on September 27, 2025.
