Jo Almaas Marstein, born on October 25, 2002 in Oslo, Norway, is a rapper known professionally as Marstein. He grew up in the Gamle Oslo district and played for youth teams of the football club VÃ¥lerenga Oslo during his adolescence. In 2017, Marstein co-founded the rap group Undergrunn with Patrick Bakkeng, Gabriel Doria, Marcos Haugestad, Sverre Skogheim Gudmestad, and Jon Ranes. The group released their debut EP UG Sommer in autumn 2018.
Marstein's solo career began with the release of his first album, Medici Marstein, on September 23, 2022. This was followed by an EP, Xania, on November 25, 2022. His second album as a solo artist, Frihet i lenker, was released on October 25, 2024. Marstein's music has been noted for its dreamy quality and historical references, often drawing comparisons to cloud rap and the work of Cezinando. Notable songs from his discography include "Frida Kahlo" and "Sammen", a collaboration with Danish singer Annika that reached Number 1 in both Norwegian and Danish single charts.
Marstein has achieved significant chart success, with Medici Marstein debuting at Number 1 on the Norwegian album charts and "Frida Kahlo" reaching the top spot on the Norwegian singles charts. He received two nominations for P3 Gull in 2023, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for "Sommerhus".
