Biography

Marnie Stern doesn't look like a rock star. She's shy, small, nervous and has a homespun, butter-wouldn't-melt grin more befitting of a librarian. But then she starts to play guitar. Finger-tapping, thrashing and shredding at a demonic speed, she channels the 1980s metal gods and feeds off experimental new wave and post punk acts such as Television and Deerhof. Debut album In Advance Of The Broken Arm (2007) was declared "the year's most exciting rock and roll album," by the New York Times and Stern's unique style quickly made her one of the world's leading female players. Follow-up This Is It.(2008) was named in Pitchfork's 50 Best Albums of 2008 list, before third album Marnie Stern (2010) showed a more open and emotional side, and talked about the suicide of her ex-boyfriend. She has supported the Flaming Lips and become more prominent on the festival circuit in recent years, but remains a cult figure acclaimed for her frantic, harmonic, whirlwind guitar playing and humble, honest songwriting.
