Biography
Mark Atkins is an Australian Aboriginal musician recognized for his skill on the didgeridoo, a traditional instrument. In 1990, he won the Golden Didjeridu competition. Throughout his career, Atkins has collaborated with notable artists such as Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Hothouse Flowers, Marlene Cummins, Philip Glass, The Black Arm Band, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1994, Atkins played the didgeridoo continuously for over 50 minutes using circular breathing technique in his Didgeridoo Concerto (1995), setting an unofficial world record at the time. He also collaborated with Wurundjeri elder Joy Murphy Wandin and composer Philip Glass on the concert work Voices, performed at Melbourne Town Hall and New York's Lincoln Center in 2001. In 2011, he released Dreamtime, followed by Glass: Voices for Didgeridoo and Organ in 2014.
