Biography

The Marine Girls were an English post-punk group formed in 1980 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Founded by Tracey Thorn and Gina Hartman, they later added Jane Fox on bass and her sister Alice Fox on vocals and percussion. Their debut album, Beach Party (1981), was recorded in a garden shed and released through In-Phaze Records before being reissued by Whaam! Records. In 1981, Hartman left the band, and Thorn released her solo album, A Distant Shore. The Marine Girls continued with their second album, Lazy Ways, in 1983, which was ranked 42nd among NME's "Albums of the Year." They also recorded two Peel Sessions for BBC Radio 1. From 1982 onwards, Thorn focused on her studies and relationship with Ben Watt, leading to the formation of Everything But The Girl. The Marine Girls officially disbanded in 1983.
