MarieâPaule Belle, born 25â¯Januaryâ¯1946 in PontâSainteâMaxence, Oise, was a French singer, pianist, songwriter and comedian whose career began in the late 1960s. After earning a psychology degree and performing in cabarets such as LâÃchelle de Jacob, she won the 1969 Chapeau de Radio Monteâ¯Carlo contest, releasing her first 45ârpm on CBS and a second with BAM; her debut Ãa mâest égal appeared in 1973. Marie-Paule Belle gained national recognition with the single "La Parisienne", earning a gold record in 1977, and released the albums MarieâPaule Belle (1973) and Celui (1976). She signed with Polydor before moving to Carrère in 1981, issuing three studio albums and the notable ReBelle (2011). Her repertoire includes covers of Barbaraâs songs and collaborations with Sergeâ¯Lama, Williamâ¯Sheller, and Françoiseâ¯MalletâJoris. Marie-Paule Belle was knighted in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1988, promoted to officer in 1997, and commander in 2022, and continued to perform in France and abroad. In 2026, the compilation Best Of was released with her most well-known songs. Later that year, Marie-Paule Belle died of breast cancer on July 25, 2026, at the age of 80.
