Biography
Marcia Llyneth Griffiths, born 23â¯Novemberâ¯1949 in Kingston, Surrey, Jamaica, began her career in 1964 performing with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires after being heard by Phillip James of The Blues Busters; the next day she received offers from Ronnie Nasralla and Clement Dodd, choosing Doddâs Studio One where she recorded duets with Tony Gregory, Bob Marley, Jeff Dixon, and Bob Andy. In 1968 her single "Feel Like Jumping" became her first solo success, followed by a string of Studio One hits written by Bob Andy. She recorded for producers such as Sonia Pottinger and Joseph Hoo Kim in the 1970s, releasing albums including Sweetâ¯Bitterâ¯Love (1974), Naturally (1978), and Steppin' (1979). In 1982 she released "Electricâ¯Boogie" written by Bunny Wailer; the 1989 remix became the soundtrack for the line dance Electric Slide, reaching numberâ¯51 on the U.S. Billboard Hotâ¯100 and becoming the bestâselling single by a female reggae artist. Marcia Griffiths contributed background vocals to the Grammyâwinning album Trueâ¯Love by Toots and the Maytals (2004) and appeared in the 2011 documentary Reggaeâ¯Gotâ¯Soul. In 2014 she participated to the tribute album Songs That Inspire Me, Songs I Love to Sing, and in 2018 signed with Donsome Records. Her achievements were honored with the Jamaican Order of Distinction (Commander class) in 2014 and the Order of Jamaica (OJ) in Octoberâ¯2023. In 2026, her rocksteady classic"Feel Like Jumping" reached number 40 on the UK Physical Singles Sales Chart.
