Marcello Panni, born on January 24, 1940, is an Italian conductor and composer. He studied at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and later under Goffredo Petrassi and Manuel Rosenthal. He composed orchestral works, such as Prétexte pour orchestre (1964). Panni debuted as a conductor in 1969 at the Biennale di Venezia. In 1971, he founded the Ensemble Teatro-Musica, touring Europe with works by notable composers. As a guest conductor, he performed at venues including the Paris Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, and Vienna State Opera. He directed world premieres such as Morton Feldman's Neither (1976) and Philip Glassâs The Civil Wars (1984). Panni held leadership roles like artistic director of the Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan and music director of the Opera Bonn. His compositions include operas like Hanjo (1994), based on a play by Yukio Mishima.
