Biography

Giuseppe Patanè was an Italian conductor born on January 1, 1932, in Naples. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by opera and for being a specialist in the conducting of Italian opera. Patanè's career began after he studied at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella and debuted in 1951. He conducted the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a production of the opera La bohème in 1958. He achieved professional recognition for serving as the chief conductor of the Linz Opera between 1961 and 1962 and the artistic director of the Real Opera in Copenhagen in 1967. Patanè achieved professional recognition for conducting at the Teatro alla Scala starting in 1970 and the Metropolitan Opera House starting in 1975. His recording career included the studio recording Andrea Chénier (1987) and the studio recording Il barbiere di Siviglia (1988). Patanè achieved professional recognition for serving as the chief conductor of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester from 1985 to 1989. He died on May 29, 1989, while conducting a performance of the opera Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
