Lullabye Arkestra, a Canadian musical duo from Toronto, was founded in 2001 by Justin Small and Katia Taylor. Their first release was the self-issued demo Bzaster in 2002, which featured contributions from members of Do Make Say Think. The group's lineup evolved over time, performing both as a duo and with additional touring musicians. In 2006, they released their debut full-length album Ampgrave on Constellation Records, described by Allmusic as "deep distortion-drenched soul music." In 2009, Taylor and Small married and signed with Vice Records, releasing their second full-length album Threats/Worship. The album was preceded by the single "We Fuck the Night", which featured a music video paying homage to the films of George A. Romero. That same year, they sang backing vocals on the album The Chemistry of Common Life by Fucked Up.
