Biography
Dona Onete, born Ionete da Silveira Gama on June 18, 1939, in Cachoeira do Arari, Brazil, is a Brazilian vocalist known for her contributions to traditional music genres. By age fifteen, she was already singing sambas, quadrilles, and boi bumba. Onete conducted research into regional rhythms, dances, and traditions. Her breakthrough came with the release of her first album Feitiço Caboclo (2012) at 73 years old. She developed a hybrid genre called carimbó chamegado. After retiring to Pedreira, she performed throughout Brazil and internationally, including in the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Germany, and New York City. Onete was named to the Brazilian Ordem do Mérito Cultural in 2017. Her album Rebujo (2019) was considered one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the first half of the year by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics.
