Biography

Los Ribereños are a legendary Peruvian psychedelic cumbia group founded in the late 1960s by guitarist and vocalist Juan Benigno Tapia, known artistically as John Beni. After starting his first band The Peruvian Boys and touring Ecuador under the name Perú y Mi Son, Beni returned to Lima determined to break into the local scene. Signing with the iconic label Virrey, the group officially became Los Ribereños and quickly gained recognition for their unique fusion of Colombian cumbia, Cuban guaracha, and electric guitar-driven Amazonian rhythms. Their debut single in 1968, "Silbando," backed with "Don José," became an immediate hit and remains one of the most iconic tracks of Peruvian cumbia. Throughout the early 1970s, Los Ribereños released a series of successful albums, including Silbando (1969), Sensacional (1971)—a collaboration with Compay Quinto—and Sola en el Mar (1973), cementing their place among the pioneers of the genre. Later, they recorded under Infopesa and John Beni's own label Benisa, further expanding their influence. Although the group disbanded in the 1980s, John Beni’s return to Peru reignited the project, promising new material that blends their classic psychedelic cumbia sound with contemporary elements.
