Biography

Los Rayos del Norte is the 1990s norteño project founded and led by singer and bajo sexto player Sergio Vega after he split from Los Hermanos Vega, shaping a tight accordion–bajo sexto sound with bass and drums while signing to Digital/Universal for his first releases under the new banner. Early output quickly delivered regional traction through story-driven corridos and romantic cuts such as “Las Parcelas de Mendoza,” “El Dólar Doblado,” “El Ayudante,” “Olor a Hierba,” “Eres Mi Estrella,” and “Ayúdame a Vivir,” establishing Vega as the project’s principal voice and songwriter. As momentum grew, the act rebranded as Sergio Vega y Sus Shakas del Norte, carrying forward the same core repertoire on larger stages and into the 2000s. Following Vega’s death in 2010, the Los Rayos del Norte catalog continued to circulate widely via digital reissues credited as Los Rayos del Norte de Sergio Vega, including the compilation Con Olor a Hierba and the albums Eres Mi Estrella and A través de la Luna, which resurfaced signature tracks for a streaming audience; a later set, Como la Lluvia, arrived in 2017.
