Loop Guru was formed by bassist and guitarist Salman Gita, born Sam Dodson in 1985, and programmer Jamuud, born David Muddyman, who met around 1980 and first performed together in The Transmitters. Their breakthrough came with the 1992 single "Shrine" under the Loop Guru name, blending Western dance beats with Indonesian gamelan and Indian textures. The group released Duniya in 1994, followed by Catalogue of Desires in 1996, Loop Bites Dog in 1997, and the compilation Loopus Interruptus in 2001. Notable tracks include "Paradigm Shuffle" (1993), built around a Martin Luther King Jr. speech, and "Sussantics" (1993). Collaborations featured Natacha Atlas, Sussan Deyhim, and Count Dubulah, while guest musicians such as Mad Jym and Cat von Trapp enriched their sound. The band continued to perform internationally until David Muddymanâs death on 27 March 2022, after which posthumous releases and retrospective compilations were issued, preserving their contribution to electronic worldbeat music.
