Biography

Lloyd Vernon âSkipâ Martin (May 14, 1916 â February 12, 1976) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and music arranger. Born in Robinson, Illinois, Martin arranged for swing bands during the 1930s and 1940s, including the ensembles of Count Basie, Charlie Barnet, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Martin performed as a reedist for Goodman and recorded with trumpeter Cootie Williams. He authored the big-band chart for âIâve Got My Love to Keep Me Warmâ for Les Brownâs orchestra. In the 1950s, Martin moved to Los Angeles, working as an orchestrator and studio conductor. His discography included the leader albums The Music from Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer (1959) and Scheherajazz (1959). Martin orchestrated Hollywood films such as Singin' in the Rain (1952) and Guys and Dolls (1955). He served as the orchestrator for A Star Is Born (1954), which featured his arrangements of âThe Man that Got Awayâ and âItâs a New Worldâ. Martin died in Los Angeles in 1976.
