Little Birdy, an Australian indie rock band, was formed in Perth, Western Australia, in 2002 by Katy Steele on vocals and guitar, Matt Chequer on drums, Simon Leach on guitar and keyboard, and Scott O'Donoghue on bass. The band's breakthrough came when their single "Relapse" gained popularity on alternative radio stations like Triple J, leading to a signing with Eleven: A Music Company. Little Birdy released their self-titled debut EP Little Birdy in October 2003, which peaked at number 27 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Their first studio album, Bigbiglove, was released in September 2010 and reached number 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The band's second EP, This Is A Love Song EP, debuted at number 22 in March 2004. In October of the same year, they released their debut album, Bigbiglove, which included new versions of "Beautiful" and "Relapse", as well as "I Should've Known". The band's second album, Hollywood, was released in 2006 and peaked at number 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their third album, Confetti, was released in May 2009 and reached Number 6. In February 2010, Chequer announced that Steele had moved to New York to work on her debut solo album, marking a significant shift for the band.
