Biography

A minimalist funk band that emerged from the New York punk/no wave scene, Liquid Liquid left a lasting mark, notably with the track "Cavern", sampled by Grandmaster & Melle Mel in the old-school hip-hop classic "White Lines". Formed in 1978 by Salvatore Principato, Richard McGuire, Scott Hartley and Dennis Young, the group recorded two limited-edition EPs for 99 Records, Liquid Liquid and Successive Reflexes in 1981, before releasing Optimo (1983), produced by Don Hünerberg, from which the track "Cavern" is taken. Although Liquid Liquid broke up in 1983, other Liquid Liquid tracks were sampled and included in electronic disco compilations such as 2008's Disco Not Disco. Following the release of the Liquid Liquid compilation with live recordings in 1997, the musicians decided to reform and extended their discography with remixes and new material compiled in Slip In and Out of Phenomenon, released on the Domino label in 2008. He has also performed on a number of European stages, including LCD Soundsystem's farewell concert in 2011.
