Biography

Les Sacqueboutiers, an ensemble of ancient music founded in 1976 in Toulouse, France, was established by Jean-Pierre Canihac and Jean-Pierre Mathieu. The group initially focused on the rediscovery of ancient brass instruments, particularly the cornett and sakbut. Their early work involved extensive research into performance styles for Renaissance and Baroque music. Les Sacqueboutiers collaborated with prominent ensembles such as Hespèrion XXI and Les Arts Florissants, performing at major festivals across Europe, North and South America, and Japan. The ensemble released several albums, including La Sacqueboute - The Sackbut in 2002 and The Cries of London in 2004. They were selected as Ensemble of the Year at the Victoires de la musique classique in 2008 and celebrated their 40th anniversary with a series of events, including an international competition for ancient brass instruments.
