Biography
Leopold Ludwig, born on January 12, 1908, in Witkowitz, Moravia, was a German conductor active primarily in Austria and Germany. He trained as a pianist at the Vienna Conservatory under Emil Paur and began his conducting career in the 1930s. In 1950, Ludwig became general music director of the Hamburg State Opera, a role that brought him international recognition through innovative repertoire and tours. From 1958 to 1969, he was a frequent guest conductor at the San Francisco Opera, conducting works such as Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" and "Die Kluge". He also made notable appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in the early 1970s. Leopold Ludwig died on April 25, 1979, in Lüneburg.
