Leonard Warren, born Leonard Warenoff on April 21, 1911 in the Bronx to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, was an American operatic baritone. He joined the chorus at Radio City Music Hall in 1935 and entered the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air in 1938, leading to a study trip to Italy and his concert debut at the Metropolitan Opera that November. His operatic debut followed as Paolo in Simon Boccanegra in January 1939. Warren's career included the notable role as Rigoletto, recorded for RCA Victor in 1950, and performances in operas like La traviata, Tosca, and Aida. He toured internationally, including the Soviet Union in 1958. Warren's final performance was as Simon Boccanegra on March 1, 1960. Three days later, he collapsed and died on stage during a performance of La forza del destino at the Metropolitan Opera.
