Biography

Leona Machálková is a Czech singer born in 1967 in Zlín. She began her career at age 18 performing with the musical groups Damiján and Znamení dechu. In 1991, she moved to Prague where she joined the Semafor theatre. Machálková became a prominent figure in Czech musical theatre, starring in productions including West Side Story (1993), Jesus Christ Superstar (1994) and Dracula (1995). In 2000, she had a leading role in the musical Monte Cristo, which was the most expensive Czech production of its time. She released her debut solo album, Leona, in 1996. Under the guidance of composer Karel Svoboda, she issued the albums of cover versions Film a muzikál (1998) and Film a muzikál II (1999). Her recording history included the albums Blízká setkání (2001) and Jsem to já (2002). In 2005, she released the album Voda divoká, the launch of which was attended by former president Václav Havel.
