Biography

Leo Welch was an American blues and gospel singer and guitarist born in the United States in 1932. Welch worked as a lumberjack for several decades while performing in churches and local venues. They developed a hybrid style of blues gospel and performed extensively in church networks across the southern United States. Their recording career began at age 81 with the album Sabougla Voices (2014). Subsequent recordings include I Don't Prefer No Blues (2015), Live at Iridium (2017), and The Final Session (2017). Their final album, The Angels in Heaven Done Signed My Name (2019), was released posthumously and was named a favorite blues album by AllMusic. Welch died in 2017.
