Biography

Los Cachorros de Juan Villarreal trace their origins back to 1962 when accordionist Juan Villarreal and his brother José María Villarreal began performing in Tamaulipas’s cantinas; following José’s passing in 1972, Juan reassembled the group with singer and bajo sexto player Baldemar García, establishing the band’s long-standing format. The ensemble, currently featuring Juan Villarreal (accordion and vocals), Juan José Villarreal (bajo sexto and vocals), Crescencio Moreno (bass), and Ramon Rodríguez III (drums), has recorded over 50 albums and remains one of the most prolific Norteño groups. Their late-1990s breakthrough came with the album El Cartel de los Cielos (1997), which expanded their audience across the U.S. and Mexico. They reaffirmed their place in the genre with Al Pie de un Árbol (2001), Estrellas y Diamantes (2002), No Logre Olvidarte (2005), Abran Botellas (2007), and Corridos de la Gloria al Infierno (2007). In 2023, the group released Puras Norteñitas and Entre Amigos, Vol. 2, maintaining a steady presence in regional charts. In 2024, they released a run of singles including "El Reflejo del León," "El de la Flor," "Julion," "Don Juan," "Browning 380," and "Alfredito Olivas." Their 2024 release Me Aventaste las Llaves, is a 13-track collection of corridos and rancheras that stays true to their raw, electric sound. That same year, they also appeared on the collaborative Christmas track "Santa Claus Llegó a la Ciudad" alongside Torrente, Intenso, Los del Carril, and others. With classic songs like "Se Les Peló Baltazar" and "Sabiendo Quién Era Yo," an enduring touring career across Mexico and the U.S., and a deep catalog spanning over six decades, Los Cachorros continued to define the traditional Norteño sound while adapting to new audiences.
