Biography

La Luz is an American surf rock and indie rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2012. The all-female line-up, founded by singer and guitarist Shana Cleveland, was then completed by Katie Jacobson (keyboards), replaced by Alice Sandahl, Abbey Blackwell (bass) and Marian Li Pino (drums). Critically acclaimed for its reverbed vintage guitars, luminous vocal harmonies and psychedelic influences, debut album It's Alive was released in 2013 on the Hardly Art label, as were the next three Weirdo Shrine (2015) with new bassist Lena Simon, then Floating Features (2018) and La Luz (2021), with drummer Audrey Johnson. In 2024, Alice Sandahl announces her departure and is replaced by Maryam Qudus on keyboards, while Lee Johnson takes Lena Simon's place. Under this new configuration, News of the Universe is recorded, La Luz's first album for the Sub Pop label.
