Biography

Klaus Thunemann, a German bassoonist, was born on April 19, 1937, in Magdeburg. He initially studied piano but later focused on the bassoon, moving to West Berlin in 1957 to study at the Hochschule für Musik. Upon graduating in 1960, Thunemann joined the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra as its youngest player and became principal bassoonist from 1962 to 1978. He won a prize at the 1965 ARD International Music Competition and recorded extensively for labels like Philips Records and Deutsche Grammophon, including works by Vivaldi and Mozart. From 1978, he focused on teaching at institutions such as the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover and the Reina Sofía School of Music. He was honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany upon his retirement in 2006 and continued performing occasionally until his death on August 29, 2025.
