Biography
Kirsten Bråten Berg is a Norwegian traditional folk singer and silversmith who was born in Arendal, Norway, in 1950. She is famous for her work in the kveding vocal tradition and for bridging Norwegian and West African musical cultures. Berg achieved early professional recognition in 1970 after attending a folk music course and has since won several Spellemannprisen awards, including for the recordings Slinkombas (1979) and Min kvedarlund (1988). Her discography includes the studio recordings Joletid (1991), Syng du mi røyst (2001), and Stemmenes skygge (2005). She collaborated with the jazz bassist Arild Andersen and West African musicians on the recording Frå Senegal til Setesdal (1997). For her contributions to culture, she was made a Knight First Class of the Order of St. Olav in 2005. She is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
