Biography

Karl Ristenpart was a German conductor. He was strongly influenced in his youth by Hermann Scherchen’s early performances in Berlin. He studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin (1924–1929) and later with Hugo Kauder in Vienna. In 1932, he founded a chamber orchestra in Berlin, the Karl Ristenpart Chamber Orchestra. During the 1930s and World War II period, he continued conducting and undertook extensive touring work with his ensemble across Europe. After the war, he played a central role in rebuilding orchestral and choral music at RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) in Berlin from 1946, where he gained international recognition, particularly through his “J. S. Bach cycle” from 1947 to 1952. In 1953, Ristenpart relocated to the Saarland, where he founded the Saarland Chamber Orchestra, later known as the Saarland Radio Chamber Orchestra. Ristenpart died on December 24, 1967, in Lisbon.
