Kalyan Kumar Mukherjea was a sarod player and authority on Indian classical music. Born in 1943 in Calcutta, India, he began his musical training under Radhika Mohan Maitra in 1956. Mukherjea's career combined formal training with self-directed study. He also excelled as a mathematician, earning degrees from Cambridge University and Cornell University. His mathematical contributions include publications on Fredholm manifolds and coincidence theory. Mukherjea's musical performances were limited to about 50 concerts over 25 years. His album Raga Shuddh Kalyan, released in 2003 by India Archive Music, gained global recognition. He passed away on March 31, 2010.
