Biography

Founded in 1987 in New York City, Jungle Brothers is a rap and hip-hop trio composed of Mike Gee (real name Michael Small), DJ Sammy B (Sammy Burwell), and Afrika Baby Bam (Nathaniel Hall). The trio were part of the jazz rap scene, a laid-back style that was similar to contemporaries such as Stetsasonic, De La Soul, Moni Love, and A Tribe Called Quest. Their debut album, Straight Out the Jungle, appeared in 1988 on the independent label Warlock Records. The album contained the singles "I'll House You" and "Black Is Black", both of which entered the UK Singles chart. Jungle Brothers caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records, who signed the group and released the 1989 album Done by the Forces of Nature. After a four-year break, they returned with J Beez wit the Remedy (1993). Jungle Brothers released a further five albums before they decided to take a hiatus in 2006. They returned in 2020 with their ninth album Keep It Jungle. While the band was critically successful in the US, they had more commercial success in the UK, landing 14 singles in the British Top 100 including 1990’s “What U Waitin’ 4” (Number 35), “Jungle Brother ‘98” (Number 18), and 1999’s “V.I.P” (Number 52).
