Biography

Joy Kills Sorrow, an American indie pop and roots string band from Boston, was formed in 2005. The group initially consisted of Matthew Arcara on guitar and other members who would evolve over time. In 2007, the band won first prize in the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, marking a significant early achievement. Their debut album, Joy Kills Sorrow, was released in 2006. The group's lineup changed several times, including bassist Bridget Kearney leaving in September 2012 to focus on her own project, Lake Street Dive, and Zoe Guigueno joining as the new bassist in February 2013. The band released three more albums, such as Darkness Sure Becomes This City (2010), This Unknown Science (2011), and an EP titled Wide Awake (2013). In February 2014, Joy Kills Sorrow announced its disbandment, playing their final show on May 1, 2014, at Cambridge's Lizard Lounge.
