Biography

Jonathan Bruce Shain, born on November 18, 1967 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, is an American folk musician, guitarist, singer‑songwriter, producer, teacher, and recording artist based in Durham, North Carolina. Shain began playing guitar at age 12 and formed his first band, Positive Feedback, during high school. He attended Duke University, where he was introduced to Piedmont blues. In 1989, he formed the blues‑rock duo Flyin' Mice with bassist John Whitehead, which later evolved into a trio incorporating vintage bluegrass influences. The band released several albums under Dr. Lime Records before disbanding in 1996. Shain then started WAKE, an alt‑country group, which broke up in early 1998. His solo career began with the release of Brand New Lifetime in 1999, followed by several other albums. He won the International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category in 2019.
