Biography

Jonathan "Johnny" Kemp was born on August 2, 1959, in the Bahamas and began performing in nightclubs at age 13 before moving to Harlem, New York, in 1979 with the band Kinky Fox. Kemp's early career involved successful songwriting and session work, including collaborations on albums such as B.B. & Q. Band’s All Night Long (1982) and Change’s Sharing Your Love (1982). He landed a solo recording contract with Columbia Records in 1986, releasing his self-titled debut album that charted at number 36 on Billboard's Top Black Albums chart. The album featured the minor hit single "Just Another Lover", which peaked at number 14 on Billboard’s Hot Black Singles chart and reached number 26 in Club Play. Kemp achieved greater success with his subsequent album, Secrets of Flying (1987), which included two Top 5 hits on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart: "Dancin' with Myself" and "Just Got Paid". The latter reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1988, selling over a million singles in the United States. Kemp continued to perform and collaborate with other artists throughout his career. He appeared on Keith Sweat's DVD release, Sweat Hotel Live (2007), featuring a live performance of "Just Got Paid". Kemp passed away on April 16, 2015, at the age of 55.
