Johnnie Bassett, born October 9, 1935, in Marianna, Florida, was an American electric blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. He moved to Detroit in 1944 and started playing with Joe Weaver and the Bluenotes. After serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to Detroit and worked as a session musician for Fortune Records. Bassett's solo career began in the 1990s with his backing band, the Blues Insurgents, releasing albums like Bassett Hound (1997) and Cadillac Blues (1997), which was nominated for five W.C. Handy Awards. He also received the Detroit Blues Society's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. His final album, The Gentleman is Back, was released in 2009. Bassett passed away on August 4, 2012, from cancer.
